A LITTLE ABOUT US

Our lab studies how children understand mathematics, where their difficulties are, and how they can learn better. We are also interested in how learning takes place in general and what makes us a better learner.

Crystal

Student Intern (2018-2019)

Hi! I’m Crystal. I’m currently studying in faculty of Social Sciences with major of Psychology. Through my previous experience about conducting research in rational reasoning of educational psychology, as well as experience about volunteer activities of working with disabled children in local community, I developed my strong interest in children development. This motivated me to explore more about how cognitive and social factors influence children development, and how education plays an role in enhancing children learning abilities.

Kenny

Student Intern (2018-2019)

Hi everyone! This is Kenny, a year 3 student studying Psychology. I am curious about learning processes and intelligence. I hope that I can gain hands on experience in research and understand development of intelligence in children.

Jessica Yung

Student Intern (2017-2018)

I am Jessica Yung. I am currently a year 3 student at the University of Hong Kong majoring in Psychology. Having spent two years studying psychology, I am especially interested in studying how children understand and acquire different learning skills. As an intern at the Learning and Development Lab, I wish to know more about the methods and difficulties that take place during stages of child development. This will definitely be an unforgettable and fruitful experience for me.

Marky Pang

Student Intern (2017-2018)

Hi, it is Marky, a year III student who majors in Psychology.

I am delighted to join this lab as a student intern who is responsible for data management, coding and assisting research-related activities. It is also interesting to understand and help students who have math difficulties (including myself).

Catherine Au

Student Intern (2016-2017)

I am a graduate from HKU with major in Psychology and Counseling, I will further my interest in Education and Psychology with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

My research interest are child development, learning strategies and learner diversity. Working at Dr. Chan's lab have broadened my understanding of cognitive development of young children. Throughout the project on mathematical abilities of young children, I have gained more hands on experiences in data collection and understandings on theory-practice integration in the local context.

It have been my pleasure to learn about learner difficulties and strategies from Dr Chan's lab. I am also grateful to work with enthusiastic lab members in the semester. Therefore, I am looking forward to learn more about the field in the future.

John Fung

Student Intern (2016-2017)

Hi, I am John. I am a recent graduate and working as a normal salary man now. Since started working, I have been a bit nostalgic reviewing my university life. Undoubtedly, taking part in the Developmental Psychology Lab has always been one of the best things ever happened during the academic years. I truly appreciated the opportunity to work with different professions and to get my hands on practical research in real contexts.

Data entry is the most important process to construct a validate result but it may as well be monotonous. Thanks to Josh and Nathan and all other colleagues to spare the boredom. Thanks to that precious experience of handling massive amount of information, I am now a proficient information processor at a renowned banking cooperation.

Please do not think that lab work is all about boring data analysis and report writing, data collection is also a big part. Conducting experiments was another remarkable experience that you will never forget. Surprised, confused, intrigued and impatience. It was interesting to find all kinds of expressions on participants.

Finally, to those of you who would like to join the Developmental Psychology Lab, I wish you would have the extraordinary experiences like I did during the internship.
